STARKE, Fla. (AP) A serial killer who terrorized Florida with a 1984 spree that claimed the lives of 10 women was executed Thursday.
Inmate Bobby Joe Long was pronounced dead at 6:55 Thursday after a lethal injection at Florida State Prison, authorities said.
The killer terrified the Tampa Bay area for eight months in 1984 as women began showing up dead, their bodies often left in gruesome positions. Most of the victims were strangled. Some had their throats slit. Others were bludgeoned.
Law enforcement had few clues until the case of Lisa Noland. Then 17, Noland was abducted by Long outside a church that year. He raped her but ultimately let her go free. She left evidence of his crimes on the scene and gave police details that lead to his capture.

(14,799 posts)When I first moved to SoFla I worked in a small hospital. Nice place. They hired this tech and his name back then was Bob Long. You could tell he wasn't wrapped too tight but they needed the help and he had all the licenses.. Army trained. Talking to him he seemed ok but would say some strange things and told some weird stories. Said when in the military he got in a motorcycle accident, hit his head and was never the same since. Neighbor played music too loud and broke the guys door down and threw him out the window. Lucky it was a ground floor apartment.
I had to intervene one time while he was on the floor doing a portable x-ray and got in a "discussion" with a father of a child. He almost got into a fight.
Last straw was when he cursed out a female tech for being lazy (she wasn't) and made an anti semitic remark... Ok he was gone...
Fast forward a few years and I'm channel surfing and see America's Most Wanted or one of those cop shows and they are talking about "Bobby Joe Long"... It did not click. We called him Bob. At the end of the piece he is in court walking from one door to the next, he turns and faces the camera and says..
The b***h couldn't take a joke.. HOLY SHIT IT'S BOB LONG!!! Years later the manager who fired him and I talked about working with a murderer...
Very weird...
