Sensitive health data from Medibank, including information about abortions, has been posted on the dark web, prompting the minister for home affairs, Clare ONeil, to pledge police would track down the scumbags behind the hack.
On Thursday morning, on a dark web blog linked to the REvil Russian ransomware group, the attacker posted a file labelled abortions alongside claims they had sought US$10m from Medibank to prevent the leak of the data.
The data in the file is understood to include procedures claimed by a policyholder related to the termination of pregnancy, including non-viable pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, miscarriages, and readmission for complications.
ONeil told the parliament during question time on Thursday that the full weight of the Australian Federal Police and Australian Signals Directorate were coming for those who leaked the information.

The major hack of an Australian health insurers patient data escalated in scope Friday as more information identifying individuals who received abortions or treatment for mental health issues, alcoholism and addiction recovery were released on a dark web forum that appears linked to Russian hackers.
The insurer, Medibank, said in a statement that the data included names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers and email addresses. Chief Executive David Koczkar said the informations release after a demand for ransom money was rejected was an attack on the most vulnerable members of our community.
The weaponization of peoples private information in an effort to extort payment is malicious, he said.
Medibank acknowledged on Oct. 13 that it had been hacked. It later said the personal information of 9.7 million customers and 480,000 health claims was accessed.
