Jim Thorpe, stripped of his 1912 gold medals because he'd been paid to play minor league baseball, was reinstated Thursday as the sole winner of that year's Olympic decathlon and pentathlon by the International Olympic Committee.

Thorpe, voted the greatest athlete of the first half of the 20th century by The Associated Press, won the decathlon and pentathlon at the Stockholm Olympics. However, because he had played minor league baseball in 1909-10 -- earning a reported $2 per game to $35 per week -- he was stripped of the medals in 1913 for violating the existing amateurism rules. The Amateur Athletic Union in the United States withdrew Thorpe's amateur status, and the IOC unanimously stripped Thorpe for being a professional.

The decision has been controversial ever since, especially to Native American communities. Thorpe was a member of the Sac and Fox Nation, and was the first Native American to win a gold medal.

I've always been a big fan of T&F.
There's no event i can think of that i don't enjoy watching.
Well, race walking isn't my thing. Not sure if that counts as T&F.

EUGENE, Ore., July 15 (Reuters) - Allyson Felix was denied a golden goodbye at the World Championships after the United States took bronze behind Dominican Republic and Netherlands in a spectacular 4x400m mixed relay in Eugene, Oregon on Friday. ...

"I've had such good memories. I know it is time and these guys will carry it on into the future," she said. "I am at peace stepping into this next stage and have tremendous gratitude for this sport."

The race capped the opening day of action in Eugene, where organisers failed to fill the stands for the first World Championships on U.S. soil as they look to build a bigger American fan basefor the sport.

"Crowds tonight disappointing," American four-times Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson tweeted. "This is not the ideal situation. Last race for Allyson Felix, icon of the sport and the stadium isn’t full?"
