Buggy collision leaves sprinter Hudson with glass in eye for world 200m semi

The Jamaican sprinter Andrew Hudson was left with shards of glass in his eye after a collision between two golf buggies at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Hudson needed nearly 20 minutes of medical treatment after the crash, which delayed the first of the three 200m semi-finals by 24 minutes, and was seen clearly in distress.

Eventually he decided to run, despite having blurry vision, but was unable to qualify for Friday’s final after finishing fifth in 20.38 sec.

However World Athletics later allowed Hudson to compete in the final after the Jamaican team successfully appealed.

Glad to see they've put Hudson in the final.

Only the top two from each of the semi-finals plus the two fastest non-automatic qualifiers progressed to the final, but Hudson was later granted an additional place and is set to line-up in lane one of a nine-man race tomorrow.

I saw him in the video checking his eye, but didn't realise it was that bad - BBC video here if you can watch it:

Michael Johnson has never been so unimpressed in his life. "You had one job."

..to describe what had happened. It starts at around 6:10 on the video, if you wish to skip the race itself.

When the runners in the first race were delayed, the officials moved the next two races up, which probably was a little odd for those runners as they were psyching themselves up for a 20 second run, just not that soon. There didn't seem to be any unexpected results, though.
