No real surprise here. The long trend towards monster SUV and Pickups is killing people who aren't in the vehicles. Also more dangerous for people who decide to keep a small car. Deadly by design, and that doesn't coiunt the increased pollution from exhaust, brake dust and tire wear.

Vulnerable users and occupants of small cars risk paying the price
In recent years, cars have become heavier, taller and more powerful. While passengers on board are increasingly safer in the event of an accident, the same cannot be said for passengers in smaller vehicles and vulnerable users. Thus, in a collision between two cars, one of which weighs at least twice as much as the other, the occupants of the light vehicle are 3 times more likely to suffer serious injuries than when the two vehicles have a similar mass. Likewise, the risk of fatal injuries for a pedestrian or cyclist hit by a car whose hood is 10 cm higher than average increases by 30%. These are the conclusions of a new study by the Vias institute which examined all the accidents that occurred between 2017 and 2021.
Vehicle mass
Vehicle mass has both a protective and aggressive effect: occupants of heavier vehicles are less likely to be seriously or fatally injured, while their opponents are more likely to suffer serious or fatal injuries.
Let's take the example of a collision between a 1600 kg car and a lighter 1300 kg car. The risk of fatal injuries:
decreases by 50% for occupants of the heaviest car;
increases by almost 80% for occupants of the lighter car.

(10,875 posts)They are safer to be inside, more comfortable and get just as good gas mileage as small cars now. Also better for Wintry conditions and rougher terrain. The signs point towards more people getting larger cars.
That being said, I dont think the answer should ever be buy a smaller car. But rather, dont speed, drive like an asshole -or as if anybody elses life doesnt depend on how you drive. Unsafe driving puts everybodys lives at risks regardless of the type of car you are in.

(4,800 posts)is to make it so you can't speed. Cars can only go the speed limit monitored by your location. The cars I rent in Europe all know the speed limits, even in construction zones.
Another big issue is the front ends of these beasts. They are deadly when they hit people. Lower the hoodlines and slope them more intstead of a wall. Then work on visibility. More mirrors so you can see in front and down the sides.
Cars get better fuel economy. Quick look. Chevy Malibu 2023, 30 mpg. Chevy Tahoe, 16-17 mpg depending on gas engine. Diesel gets 22. But diesel costs a bunch more and are even more polluting.
The Silverado gets 24 if diesel. The gas engines get 20 for the 4 cyl. and as low as 13.
Bigger heavier vehicles burn more fuel.

(10,875 posts)I think your response provides a lot for me to consider for safety. Interestingly enough, I feel like the Tesla SUVs meet a lot of the categories that you laid out. I dont intend to buy a Tesla partly due to the horrible person that runs it, but I will be considering a lot of the points you laid out when we purchase our next vehicle.

(542 posts)My younger MAGA brother, who one time drove a Chevy Suburban, said that he was going to buy such large-type vehicles for his two sons when they were old enough to drive. When I replied that new, young male drivers are more likely to cause car crashes and that maybe it wasn't such a good idea to give them such large, high-powered vehicles as novice 17-year-old drivers, his response was, My kids would survive the crash. Thats all I care about.

(4,800 posts)about deaths in big Pickups and SUV. Almost 50% of the deaths come when the driver aren't belted in . So the drivers aren't bothering with the safety features. His kids will probabgly be like that.

(4,074 posts)In '66 or '67 I gave a class speech on the issue at KU.
I argued the wisdom of reducing mass rather than adding armor.
Time shows that I was not listened to.

(13,391 posts)They are just as heavy as the trucks and SUV in many instances.
Car type EVs are shped a lot different than the big SUV and pickups. the sloped fronts and lower hood lines aren't as dangerous upon impact as the rolling walls that the large ones have.

(10,875 posts)I find it interesting most EVs have those features.
