Game today at Rickwood Field, Birmingham, Alabama to honor Negro League and Willie Mays.

Not much info, but timely:

On June 20, in Birmingham, Alabama, the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals will play the first Major League Baseball game at Rickwood Field, the oldest professional ballpark in the United States and former home of the Negro Leagues' Birmingham Black Barons.

The game took on even more significance Tuesday after Willie Mays, who started his professional career with the Black Barons in 1948, died at 93.

The Cardinals and Giants play Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on Fox.

Oracle Park will be open today at noon, for free, and the game will be shown on the video board. (4:15 Pacific)
John Miller will be on the call on KNBR radio.

On Fox, according to ESPN.

with Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow doing the announcing

Jon Miller, Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow are the best announcers in MLB, bar none.

I hazard to guess the boys have been burning the midnight oil collecting really cool Willie Mays anecdotes, and there are a Brazillion of them.

2. I get KNBR from a couple of hundred miles away, and the anecdotes from pro's and ordinary folks have been amazing.

On Halloween, Willie Mays gave baseballs to kids instead of candy.
What an amazing person.

I couldn't hook-up with Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow, then it dawned on me they are doing the free show at Oracle Park.

Jon Miller, Dave Fleming and Hunter Pence.

I can’t stand the Fox announcers either.

3. I've been looking at Rickwood Field and discovered why Willie Mays was able to make "The Catch" at the Polo Grounds

Rickwood Field is HUGE, with centerfield marked at 470 feet. Willie Mays made the famous catch at the Polo Grounds at the 420 foot mark; just another day at the office.

They installed a fence for today's wussy MLB players

The Rickwood Field outfield dimensions undergo drastic changes. The left-field fence is brought in from 405 feet to 325 feet. The distance to center field is reduced from 470 feet to 393 feet. Right field is modestly adjusted from 334 to 332 feet.

I'm normally not into all that pregame hype, but Jon Batiste brought his A game!

Here's hoping it's on YouTube soon

The announcers were discussing the large, orangey moon over center field. And the fact that tomorrow’s full moon will be the strawberry moon. One of them ask what the moon over Rickwood Field tonight should be called.

The answer: “The Say Hey moon!”

Perfect.
