Let's start by acknowledging that Satchel Paige was still tossing balls and strikes after he turned 59. But he was an anomaly!
MLB players who hang around after age 40 are still a rare breed. There are only five active players who have already celebrated their 40th birthdays: position players Justin Turner and Yuli Gurriel (barely hanging on with the Padres and not on the starting roster) and three pitchers -- Justin Verlander (42), Charlie Morton (41) and Max Scherzer (40).
I'm focusing on the chuckers in this thread.
Charlie Morton has already had a turn on the mound. His debut with the Orioles didn't go that well. He allowed 4 earned runs over 3.1 innings against the Blue Jays on Friday night. He gave up 7 hits, had 3 Ks and walked one.
Next up: Scherzer is on the hill for the Jays this afternoon against those same Orioles AND Verlander takes the bump for the Giants (Auggie and Brother Buzz get excited!) as San Fran visits the Reds in Cincy.
Verlander, it should be noted, still has an outside chance of reaching 300 wins, an almost unthinkable feat in the modern game. He's sitting at 262 career wins. I'd like to see him pull it off.
Anyway, I'm going to update this thread occasionally during the season to track how these relative old-timers are performing.

It's a new era in San Francisco with two proven baseball pros at the helm: Bob Melvin and Buster Posey. They in turn brought in another -- Verlander -- to impart his wisdom on the young 'uns.

At 65, Bill "Spaceman" Lee became the oldest pitcher to win a professional baseball game by throwing a complete game for the San Rafael Pacifics against the Maui Na Koa Ikaika in August 2012.
These days, he's making baseball bats and California wines Note: Bill Lee makes sure a lot of his bats make it down to the islands (Cuba).
Enjoy this marvelous interview

The Smoke Off
Song by Shel Silverstein
In the laid back California town of sunny San Rafael
Lived a girl named Pearly Sweetcake, you probably knew her well
Shed been stoned fifteen of her eighteen years and
the story was widely told
That she could smoke 'em faster than anyone could roll...
The real life Pearly Sweetcake was a close friend of Shel Silverstein, and I did know her well
