It is a cruddy way to lose a ball game, but the umps shouldn't be picking and choosing occasions to enforce the rules. Agreed?
Astros' pitcher Ryne Stanek doesn't seem to see it that way:
"The move is beyond minor," he said. "I think that's a pretty drastic call to make considering that play right there the umpire decided the game."

(60,762 posts)The vid doesn't show prior to the called offense, but apparently Stanek stepped off the rubber, then stepped back on the rubber, then back off again. I don't think you can do that by the new rules.

(8,852 posts)It would have been a tougher call in the 9th but it is a balk whatever inning you are in. You step on and set and then step off, its a balk
