Birders
Related: About this forumA hawk at the bird bath!
I think it was a Coopers Hawk .when I opened up the front door to check him out he was eyeing up a grey squirrel on the bird feeder. I think the squirrel might have been able to take him.

(19,374 posts)The bane of song birds. Not unusual for them to be attracted by bird baths. They hang around our birdfeeders on occasion during the Winter. Once, I saw two gray squirrels attack one and drive it off. As it flew away, I could faintly hear it say..."Cheeky squirrels. If you were a bit smaller, I'd eat you both."

(9,321 posts)Squirrels are prey for many creatures. They are hunted by mammals such as cats, dogs, badgers, pine martens, minks, bobcats, birds such as hawks, owls, black kites, falcons, and reptiles including rattlesnakes, bull snakes, alligator snapping turtles. Also, squirrels can be preyed upon by other squirrels.

These photos are from a battery powered camera I have mounted on the porch rail. According to the time stamp the hawk was there for at least 2 minutes
you can see the squirrels tail behind the feeder roof to the right of the frame.

(32,103 posts)of my house a few days ago. Looked out to see a hawk fly up to perch on the roof of my covered porch. It flew away before I could grab my camera or phone . But, some time later I noticed a squirrel hiding under the patio furniture on the covered porch! It was probably getting over the shock of being hunted by the hawk. Squirrels are attracted to the seed I put out for the birds and it wasn't the first time I've seen a hawk in my yard. This shot is from the last time a hawk was in my yard chasing squirrels. In this case, the Red tailed hawk was eyeballing the squirrel hiding among the rose bushes around the pole from which two feeders are hung.
