About 48 hours after he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest during a nationally televised NFL game, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin awoke for the first time Wednesday night. Unable to speak because of a tube that is helping him breathe, he grabbed a clipboard and scribbled a note on a piece of paper.
Did we win? Hamlin asked his bedside nurse.
The answer is yes, Damar, you won. You won the game of life, Dr. Timothy Pritts said Thursday afternoon at a news conference in Cincinnati, paraphrasing the response of one of his medical partners.
Hamlins memorable question elicited a combination of joy and relief from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center team that is taking care of him. As Pritts said, That tells us that its not only that the lights are on. We know that hes home, and that it appears that all the cylinders are firing within his brain.

(8,640 posts)This continuing unique saga is staying as one of the leading stories on all the news programs. This young man's struggle has touched the hearts of millions worldwide. Even if he doesn't play football again, his name will be a household word associated with perseverance. Football at the high school level and above is dangerous. Nobody thought it was this dangerous. Now we do.

(24,280 posts)I really didn't think he'd make it and am so very glad to have been wrong about that. Pulling the tube, when you know the loved one might not make it, is so rough. So glad his family didn't have to face that.
