UT football: Regents to discuss Applewhite incident

AUSTIN — Texas offensive coordinator Major Applewhite was disciplined four years ago for what athletic director DeLoss Dodds called “inappropriate, consensual behavior with an adult student,” the school revealed Friday.

UT’s board of regents will discuss the matter in a specially called Sunday meeting that will include consultation with attorneys.

In separate statements released Friday night, Dodds and Applewhite called the incident a one-time occurrence. Dodds said it happened during activities related to the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, when Applewhite was UT’s assistant head coach and running backs coach.

Dodds said he learned of the incident later that month, and that Applewhite admitted his “inappropriate conduct.” Applewhite “fully accepted his discipline, including counseling,” Dodds said.

Last month, UT women’s track and field coach announced she was resigning after UT investigated her for what she called a consensual relationship with an adult student-athlete that took place in 2002. She is considering a lawsuit claiming gender/racial bias and suggested male coaches and professors at UT had not been punished for similar relationships.

UT football: Backup quarterback Brewer arrested

Texas reserve quarterback Connor Brewer was arrested early Saturday morning for public intoxication and minor in possession of alcohol, according to the Travis County sheriff’s office.

Brewer, 19, was arrested by UT police and booked at a Travis County facility at 2:49 a.m.

A highly recruited freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., Brewer did not play during his first season with the Longhorns. He’s one of five scholarship quarterbacks on UT’s roster this spring.

the Applewhite situation isn't directly analogous to the track and field coach. Applewhite didn't have a long term relationship with an athlete under his direct control. While I'm sure the training assistant or whoever the student was indirectly under the control of the football team, it's a little difference than your exact boss. In my job, if I had a relationship with a manager from another department it would be watched but not forbidden, but I couldn't have one with my boss.
