Cult hero Cal QB leaves school 1 day after speaking at campus event
After indisputably becoming a campus hero in Berkeley during the 2024 college football season, Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza announced he’s leaving the school and entering his name into the transfer portal.
Mendoza posted a lengthy message on social media Wednesday morning, announcing his departure while sharing his appreciation for his time in Berkeley.
“And while I’ll be leaving to explore the next chapter, I wish nothing but the best for the University of California, the UC Berkeley Community, the Cal Football Program and Coach Wilcox,” Mendoza wrote. “I am forever indebted to you all for taking a chance on, and blessing a young man with an opportunity to live out his dream.”
His departure will undoubtedly hit the fan base hard, particularly given how enthusiastically Mendoza embraced the quirks of the Cal community.
