49ers' blockbuster NFL draft trade with Dolphins: SF moving up to No. 3 pick, report says

S.F. Chronicle / 3-26-21

The 49ers are getting one of the prized rookie quarterbacks.

In exchange for the Dolphins’ No. 3 pick in the NFL draft, the 49ers are trading their No. 12 pick, first-round selections in 2022 and 2023 to Miami and a 2022 third-round pick, ESPN reported.

The deal gives the 49ers the chance to grab one of three quarterbacks who are expected to be selected after the Jaguars draft Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence No. 1 overall: BYU’s Zach Wilson, Ohio State’s Justin Fields or North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. Per ESPN, the 49ers did not have a specific QB in mind. That is, they are content to grab whatever QB falls to them at No. 3.

Per the report, the 49ers are “holding on to” quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and have “no plans” to trade him.

That sounds like a lot to give up. Lynch and Shanahan must really like these college QBs.
