Updated spear gun rules coming in June

Come 22 June new rules pertaining to the importation and use of spear gun in Cayman are expected to be implemented.

That’s the word from Environment Minister Wayne Panton who made this announcement in the Legislative Assembly as he responded to questions from North Side MLA Ezzard Miller on 6 May.

Mr Panton said at this time part five of the National Conservation Law, which speaks to permits and licences has not been commenced as yet.

However he said “The Department of Environment and the National Conservation Council have been working through the preparation of a variety of licensing directives including those necessary to give effect to the new spear gun licensing regime.”

"hunting" or "other outdoor sports".

Given the low traffic of this group, there is not need to split the group.

GC&RKBA is one of the most trashed groups on DU.

How does the post in question relate to "target shooting"? There is no context other than looking for gun parts. Target shooting is done indoors, as well. which doesn't fit the SOP.

The 22lr is basically a round for target shooting and hunting squirrels, regardless of the model of gun.

13. In one way, spears have an environmental advantage over traditional hook and line,

since a properly used spear won't take an undersized fish, nor one of the wrong species (the spearo can be selective about what s/he takes, in other words). But I'm guessing their concern is more about damage to the reef structure from a misplaced sharp object, and less about over-fishing. (I've never been there, but I've read that it's also illegal to wear gloves while diving in the Caymans, to discourage the touching of delicate things.)

Still a bit of a catch-22 though, since spears are about the best (only?) way to control invasive lionfish...
