But hammocks actually kill my back.

involve a lot of nights at/above the treeline, so a tent or tarp is more useful. When a trip is entirely in trees it's usually car-camping with my wife - so again, a tent is more fun...

I think that's the only drawback to the hammocks...although, they say, "where there's a will".
