First time the USA has ever defeated Italy. First loss ever by the Italian National Team in Genoa.
The goal was scored in the 55th minute when Jozy Altidore received a cross just below the penalty spot, held the ball against two Italian defenders and dropped a pass to Clint Dempsey who shot the ball back across his body and beat the Keeper clean. Incredible defense by the US squad, including an early save by American Keeper Tim Howard to prevent a 1-0 Italian lead.
This is an historic result.

(6,261 posts)It's even more incredible that it was Italy 0 - USA 1!
Congrats to Klinsy and the boys!
I'd like to have emulated that famous Norwegian rant here by listing a number of famous Italians such as Mussolini, Caesar, Fellini, Leonardo da Vinci, etc, etc, and conclude with "your boys took a hell of a beating!", but my heart's just not in it after that rather tepid match.

(24,159 posts)I've seen some outlets reporting that Italy has never lost in Genoa, but AP says they lost there in 1924. Still, nice one Deuce!
Now that the USA has beaten Italy, Holland and France
are the only European powers the USA has never defeated.
