A Turkey Vulture was perched on the roof of our home today
While I know they are not good for your roof and the paint on your car, there is also symbolism in this bird's appearance.
While most think of vultures as harbingers of death, they are also tokens of renewal, rebirth, equalizing, tolerance, and protection.
While I'm not digging this bird's presence on my roof from a potential property damage standpoint, I'm open to believing this bird's presence was a good sign.

(27,325 posts)A beautiful bird, just sitting on top of my Saturn. Red Tail Hawks are my favorite bird so that really made my day.

(36,011 posts)They like to roost on the cell phone antennas on top of the water tower in my neighborhood. Sometimes as many as six of them up there. Could explain why we dont get such a good cell phone connection sometimes
The Velveteen Ocelot
(121,247 posts)You can easily tell them from eagles (which are common there too) because they fly with their wings at a positive dihedral angle (slightly upward) while eagles fly with their wings straight out at a flat angle. One of the few times I've seen them away from the river was the day my employer, a large airline, filed for bankruptcy. On that day I saw a couple of vultures circling the parking lot. That was pretty weird and unsettling.

(3,818 posts)get them off of your roof, their poop and vomit is highly corrosive - like off the scale above Draino. They vomit when scared so they'll be able to fly off.

(16,254 posts)I lived next to a guy and his two sons for several years and they had two very intelligent Border Collies...the mother and one of her male pups that was around 2 years old.
Around noon and suppertime, I noticed 3 vultures that would circle over their garage where the dogs lived most of the time. I didn't think much of it at first, but then they continued for 3 days. I finally called the owner and explained the situation. He immediately took both dogs to the vet.
As it turned out, the mother had heartworm so bad, he had her put to sleep. The pup had heartworm, but it was at a stage where it could be treated.
Now when I see vultures that circle over a house/property for several days, I worry and contact the people if I know their name.
I wish you the nicer of your list of possibilities.

(14,904 posts)I was walking the dog down our street and startled a Bald Eagle eating a fish in the pine tree right over my head. It screeched and flew out a few feet above my head. Next day I noticed half a fish on the ground. I took m it as a good sign.
