Take Rosaleen Norton, an artist and self-identified witch who the tabloids called “the witch of Kings Cross”. She was repeatedly arrested, had her artwork burned and was shunned and mocked by society."

Surveillance and raids from the vice squad, and seizure of her work, criminalised her, and turned her into a notorious and shocking tabloid figure. One of her sex magic partners, the celebrated Sydney Symphony Orchestra conductor Sir Eugene Goossens, was forced to flee Australia when his luggage at Sydney airport was found to contain pornography. The pair each suffered in their own way for transgressing the strict moral boundaries of the time."

1. The article says that there's a film coming out about her,

but I've seen one already. I think it was called The Witch of King's Cross, and I believe it was on Amazon, but possibly Hulu. She was definitely before her time. It's a shame what religious people do to those who are different.

The movie was interesting. I didn't know until then that postwar Australia was conservative just as it was in the U.S. I guess I'd never really thought about it before. Assholery is universal, and it transcends time.

She would have been a perfect companion for Austin Osman Spare.


They weren't quite the same age, but close.

Both Occultists and remarkably talented artists.

Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin owns the largest collection of Spares art.

It wouldn't surprise me if he had some of Rosalee's as well.
