Please keep everyone in the path of Sandy incl. my family in your thoughts for the next few days
The storm isn't even here yet (DE) and a 40' tree ripped through our den and loft area in our house. Everybody is safe, but our 12yo son was in the den when it happened. He was very shaken. We're all sleeping in the living room tonight and tomorrow night. That puts a second floor buffer between us and the trees. We have another tree on the property that I thought would have been one that could possibly lose a branch. I hope it withstands the winds and we come out on the other side of this storm ok.
I'm absolutely exhausted.
My prayers and thoughts are with everyone in its path.

(14,881 posts)You'll be in my thoughts, woodsprite...I hope you aren't near the coast. Were you able to cover your roof?!?

(12,234 posts)after we got our son calmed down, he and I ran to Home Depot to get some rope and the biggest tarps they had. I couldn't physically lift the biggest tarp, so I got three smaller ones. By the time we got back, my BiL had arrived and 4 neighbors were up on the roof with hubby. They cut the tree enough that we were able to secure a tarp and plywood over the gaping holes. Not too much water got in (another miracle since it was raining) and we were able to move all the electronic stuff (computer, tv, wii, lamps). They actually screwed the tarp to the roof with firring strips, but I'm not sure how that will hold up in the expected winds. We're all sleeping next to interior walls tonight in the living/dining room.
I'm exhausted, but totally wired.

(38,088 posts)All along, I have been fully cognizant of the fact that this storm could do just what happened to you.
I hope you were able to cover the area so you don't suffer further damage.
This thing has me truly terrified.

(12,234 posts)We're all sleeping downstairs again tonight. With all the rain and wind so far, the heavy part of the tree trunk thats still inside hasnt shifted, and the tarps look like they're holding. Looks like we're going to get some wrap-around, and accuweather said something about a "gravity wave", so I'm researching that. My son was pretty shaken all day and wanted to stay very close. His shakes ( his hands were literally shaking/jumping) finally stopped when he drifted off to sleep. I'm so thankful he wasn't hurt at all. He was sitting on a couch just off center from the skylight. Large branch pieces fell into the room when the tree pierced the roof. The plexiglass skylight shattered and its whole frame fell into the room bringing a chunk of ceiling board and insulation about 4' long. Everything that was ripped out in my daughter's loft fell out to the driveway (siding, drywall, a glass window) rather than into the den.
We are so lucky or he has some awesome guardian angels watching over him. Maybe my mom. I will say this all happened exactly where the dog looks up and barks for no apparent reason.
Gonna hit the sack (or reclining chair). Winds are picking up again.

(6,096 posts)to be psychic or even intuitive) and all of the news hype does not help...but I sense
it's more than hype... The hair on my arms is standing straight up.
I pray everyone is safe, I have a granddaughter in college at the New York Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY , but they are safe on a ship up by Albany, NY..(well I say SAFE...but i expect they will be moving soon). I don't know
I worry enough for everyone...I have to stop letting my imagination get away from me...New York City being flooded, seems to me, could cause significant problems for the entire world....and quite possibly cause a lot more deaths than 911. See the worry wart coming out in me?
One of my friends thinks this storm is just a diversion...I love my friends...but that's why I seek solace in DU...lol
Stay safe everyone

I hope all are safe...I am seeing some very awful future results here, and I really don't like the feeing at all.
