Damn, I lost my job.

Doc found someone who was willing to work for $2 less an hour than me. Bummer in this job market and it's not easy for someone my age to find work, even part time work. I live in a college town so most of the part time jobs are snapped up by students.

I really don't know why I'm posting. I guess I just want to get it off my chest.

And no, I'm not suggesting that Mars Rx "took" your job. Just that it's known for...issues in employment, specifically, people being fired for petty reasons.

It's just not a good time, but then is there ever a good time to be fired? It seems four and a half years of faithful service counts for nothing in this world.

I was considered contract labor, so he never took out deductions for unemployment. I basically had to file my FICA and FIT taxes myself. I didn't really make enough for state taxes so my accountant never filed for them. Thank you for your hug.

Currently the kids are still in school so you have the advantage of being available now.

It seems really shortsighted IMO for your employer to let you go for $2.00 an hour difference
when there is training necessary for a new employee and he does not know how they will work
out. Really, after you gave them four years of service they do this. Sad.

Here's another hug in case the first one wears off....

I heard this interesting program tonight on "On Point." It's an avenue for odd jobs and also to sell things.

http://onpoint.wbur.org/2012/04/03/micro-labor-websites

I hope you listen to the program. They had a number of experts on the show that I thought had good comments. There are some articles listed below at the web site that you might also want to read.

There are at least three sites to check out. Zaarly looked like the most interesting one to me.

I think it's sickening that your employer let you go over $2 an hour! I think he will be sorry. He will have to train, and that's an expense he'll have to recoup right there. In a friendly way, maybe you can say that if things don't work out for him, he is welcome to recontact you.

I would go see all the other docs in town and do it right away, too.

Don't let the age thing get you down. In my circle of friends in the last year:

--1 65-year old attained a high-level national management job
--1 62-year old attained a $350 a day consulting job on an indefinite basis
--1 56-year old opened a creative business where she restores and sells furniture out of a workshop in her home. Business is booming and she's having a ball meeting new people.
1 62-year old attained a regular, f-t job in a school of dentistry, where she places students in residencies

Keep us posted. You might be surprised at what comes up.

Also, I agree with Blue Iris, above. I think this is a time for employment falling by the wayside for reasons that are not so substantial.

I was talking to one of the trainers at the gym today and she says she will keep her ears open with her clients because a lot of them are business owners in the area. This may be the way. In this job market even the poorest paying jobs in my area have hundreds of applicants.
