Be a Shamash this Chanukah!

The Shamash is the candle used to light the other eight
candles of the Hanukkah menorah. It is set apart from the
other candles, often by being raised higher or by being
offset to one side. In Hebrew, Shamash means helper. It
literally spreads light and can also be seen as a metaphor
for brightening the lives of those in our community.
What light can we spread this season? Often, individuals
with disabilities are isolated and the holidays can be
particularly dark times. How do we build a circle of
support by lighting someone else’s candle? How does
our combined light further diminish the darkness?
