Sheina Gutnick, daughter of Bondi Beach terror victim Reuven Morrison, opened public hearings at Australias Royal Commission into Antisemitism with a personal account of abuse and fear since the massacre. She described being harassed in public, receiving online hate, and feeling unsafe in parts of Sydney. The inquiry, which follows one of Australias worst mass shootings, has issued interim recommendations and will deliver its final report in December.
Gutnicks account connected personal trauma to a broader trend of rising antisemitism in Australia since October 2023, which counsel assisting described as louder and more emboldened than ever. Her call for education on Jewish identity and the real-world consequences of hate reflects a community-wide plea for understanding. The commission heard similar concerns from other Jewish Australians, including Holocaust survivor Peter Halasz, who likened current hostility to dangerous historical precedents. The Independent + 1

what is happening in Australia today is not a faint echo of a distant past [but] something recognised
and cause for alarm."

(8,020 posts)Antisemitism is a sign of deep philosophical rot. My father was an antisemite, and was also violent, cruel, and evil.
He took me on a tour of Dachau when I was a child, and his comments were quite disturbing.
Nonetheless, hes dead and poorly remembered.
