University of Arizona-led asteroid mission reveals key findings

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — High carbon content and water were some of the biggest discoveries from preliminary findings from the asteroid Bennu.

The University of Arizona-led asteroid mission named OSIRIS-REx launched Sept. 8, 2016, and made its return just two weeks ago.

Today a panel was held by NASA to reveal and discuss the findings. In attendance was Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator, University of Arizona.

"As we peer into the ancient secrets preserved within the dust and rocks of asteroid Bennu, we are unlocking a time capsule that offers us profound insights into the origins of our solar system," said Lauretta.
