I got it as a teaching aid for my kid. When his class gets into computing, I want to help them build a Beowulf cluster and do some other distributed computing stuff. The Pi is an excellent platform for it, it's cheap, only about 30 bucks, and you can plug it into a TV, obviating the need for a monitor, and some TV's have a USB port that will even power the thing, otherwise recycle an old cell phone charger. Doesn't get much cheaper.
