The backfire effect

I just learned about the backfire effect from this post by The Oatmeal. I feel it explains a lot of the behavior of the religious in regards to atheists and atheism. (The Oatmeal post is a pretty fun read, too!)

I'm surprised that I've never heard of this before, nor have I seen it discussed on DU.
And, for some reason, now I want tacos.
