I'd never experienced a cyclone or hurricane

I posted a few days ago about the Southern Annular Mode affecting out weather at the moment. This from ABC Au. Wilson's Promontory is the most southerly point of mainland Au. and is just a little to the east of me.

Winds reaching 146 kilometres per hour have battered Victoria overnight, with the State Emergency Service (SES) receiving more than a thousand calls for help

A powerful cold front is moving eastwards across the state, bringing some of the most severe weather conditions of the year.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has recorded wind gusts of 146kph in Wilsons Promontory, in Victoria's south-east.

The Alpine areas have recorded winds of more than 130kph, Port Fairy and the Otways in the state's south-west had gusts of more than 100kph while there were 113kph winds in St Kilda, in Melbourne.

The BOM on Sunday likened the strength of the winds to a category two or three cyclone

I'd love to go have a look at the ocean, but too dangerous to go outside. Cursory look first thing this morning shows no major damage in the house or yard and the power is still on. I secured stuff outside yesterday.

Gibby my JRT is a bit scared of all the rattling and banging, but she'll be OK.

They can surprise you. I’ve been through a lot of them. A major one we were able to sit out on the front porch and watch due to the orientation of storm. Others that shook the house and we were in the bathtub with the kids and a mattress over us.

The last major storm we had no problems until a day after the storm. Two trees had been shaken so much the ground liquified and evidently broken some roots. The storm winds were past and it was calm then they fell.

If you have trees outside make sure you look for broken limbs overhead and bulges in the ground around the trees.

I have some enormous trees but they seem intact from a distance. Going to wait until it's calmed down a bit before I inspect closely.
