Ex-trooper sentenced to 5 years for stealing money from suspects he arrested

Brian Biehl, the South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper arrested last fall and charged with stealing $70,000 in evidence seized from people he or others arrested, was sentenced this week to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine

Biehl had worked for the Patrol for about 15 years before he admitted taking the money from May 2015 to October 2016. He was charged in early November. By the time state officials announced his charges last fall he had become an ex-trooper.

On Friday, Brule County State’s Attorney David Natvig and state Attorney General Marty Jackley announced Biehl’s sentence.
