2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHeartening responses to awful NYT editorial
So....like others I took 2 weeks off from news, newspapers, msnbc, CNN, and even DU. Lots of Springsteen and classical music. Just started to come up for air at Thanksgiving with some good family discussions. As the very rude one said, you have to put your own oxygen mask on before you can deal with others.
As I looked at the NYT editorial page today for the first time, I found myself disgusted at Douthat's suggestions on how dems need to move right to regain a place in politics again. It unfortunately reflects minor and frustrating public discussion that something is wrong with dem policies and positions.
HOWEVER...as typical, NYT readers provide MUCH better insight and perspective than the articles and editorials do and I was heartened to see the thoughtful backlash comments. I suggest that interested DUers skim the article but definitely take in the reader comments (I selected reader favorites). A bit of needed oxygen.

(18,402 posts)I've seen a bunch of threads begging us to accept white working class racism as okay, because those people are under pressure.
I saw a couple of threads urging us not to talk about gun safety measures, because it alienates the lumpen masses.
I've seen threads saying we shouldn't focus so much on racial minorities (meaning on equality).
And these all seem to be from the group of recent self-exiled returnees who like to call themselves "progressive." It's stunning.

(36,677 posts)Pieces for NYT. His pieces do not reflect the position of the editorial board. When the board writes an editorial, it's labeled as "by the NYTimes Editorial Board."

(10,749 posts)Also took time off from HuffPost and du. Even now I'm just skimming quickly. I think I'm better off that way.

(325 posts)There are a number of good comments there, too.
I'd love if the Democratic party threw a bone to the libertarian left. There are dozens of us!
