2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDigby: Yeah, these people voted for Trump because of his trade policies
From a CNN report on a follow-up support group of Trump supporters. Trump's nominees are 'top of the class,' Obama told illegal immigrants they can vote - just Google it! Sorry, but these people are not concerned about the economy or trade, they are just stupid.

Johnson continued that many anti-Trump voters had little room to complain if they failed to vote in the election. Voting is a privilege in this country, Johnson said, before adding, and you need to be legal, not like California where three million illegals voted....
Johnson then decided to source her false report directly to President Obama. I think there was a good amount because the president told people that they could vote, Johnson claimed. They said, The president said I could vote. Im here illegally....
Did you hear President Obama said that illegal people could vote? asked Camerota, to which nearly all the participants nodded their heads and replied, Yes.

(10,721 posts)So, if not trade, it must be the anti-establishment mentality, right? Oh, what's that you say, the rate of incumbent re-election was even higher than normal for both the Senate and the House?
Wait, Clinton won among those most hurt by the recession?
Gee, that "working class whites/Clinton didn't have an economic message" narrative sure does seem to collapse under the weight of critical thought.
I can't imagine Trump supporters sitting around having nuanced discussions about anything as complicated as trade.
Not to mention how insulting it is to suggest working class POC must not care about economic issues by suggesting working class whites supported Trump due to Clinton's lack of economic messaging.
Lastly, Trump's jobs message was both vague and utterly unrealistic. As for "populism," we're talking about someone who is predictably the most Wall Street friendly President-elect ever.
There's no excuse for supporting Trump.

(10,173 posts)Trump says it in a rally - people cheer, because he said something.

(10,721 posts)They cheered the second they heard Trump start to yell that he would appoint "Mad Dog Mattis" as Sec. of Defense. Even if they hadn't been cheering prior to him getting the words out, it wouldn't be a stretch to suggest most in the audience don't know a thing about "Mad Dog."
It really doesn't matter what Trump says or does. As he said, he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue in New York and not lose a supporter. Because what Trump stands for is white nationalism, anti-feminism, machismo, heterosexism, etc. And that's all that matters.

Wisconsin probably the best example of that with who they elected, and the resulting "right to work laws"

And why do they think there are so many illegals that they could tip the popular vote?

that's the impression they want to have, so they can feel like victims. If the real proportion of the population were considered, the danger to "American culture" they want to perceive wouldn't be justified.

(58,785 posts)Of course those who love it will search for and soak it in, but not everyone will be so glad to be fooled, and in a lot of social groups it's going to be less respectable to repeat it to others. Schools are going to have to start teaching kids how to vet sources earlier and better. And media platforms will become known for their willingness or resistance to spreading misinformation.
And more journalism students are going to be required to take at least one course in statistics to they can understand what they're reading or hearing a bit better.
Sorry, I just saw this mcar!
