(34,189 posts)Theres no shortage of parallels between the two populistsbut theres at least one crucial difference.
Steve Inskeep Nov 30, 2016
Steve Bannon, the media executive and soon-to-be White House strategist, has been describing Donald Trumps victory as just the beginning. Like [Andrew] Jacksons populism, he told the Hollywood Reporter, were going to build an entirely new political movement.
Newt Gingrich has compared Trump to Jackson for some time. Rudolph Giuliani declared on election night that it was like Andrew Jacksons victory. This is the people beating the establishment. That may seem a comforting comparison, since it locates Donald Trump in the American experience and makes his election seem less of a departure.
Is Trumps victory really like Jacksons? On the surface, yes: In 1828, an outsider candidate appealed directly to the people against elites he called corrupt. A deeper look at Jacksons victory complicates the comparison, but still says much about America then and now.
<SNIP>
When Bannon spoke of founding a new political movement, though, he was referring to the period immediately afterward. Jackson and his allies created a new organization, the Democratic Party. His opponents were forced to up their own political game by founding a new opposition party, and American politics began growing into the two-party rivalry that we know today. The old, staid political order cracked up.

(19,728 posts)He lost the popular vote by at least 2.5 million. The way he's running his acquisition, he will not only not win a single one of those 65,228,264 (and counting) people who voted against him, he will lose people who stupidly voted for him, for whatever reason they voted. Because he's an inept bungler with no persuasive skills, no finesse, and no class. A true winner would do the utmost to prove his personal charisma. Trump is a loser, because he won't even try.

(24,135 posts)they created him - and he's a big ratings hit so it's more about money than what words are coming out of his mouth. It's not like they won't repeat portions over and over for the next 24 hours or so.
I will not torture myself again like I did through the Bush years dealing with the media who helped lie us into a war.
