2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIn WIS, MI, and PA, 4 universities could decide the fate of 34 Limbaugh/Trump radio stations.
Democracy-loving Americans have to go on the offensive.
The University of Wisconsin 5, University of Michigan 7, Michigan State University 11, and Penn State University 11, broadcast sports on 34 right wing radio stations that will say whatever Trumps team and the GOP wants them to say to stop recounts.
Those are great places to protest recounts and anything Trump and Republican.
Those are just 4 of more than 88 universities helping more than 257 Limbaugh/Trump talk radio stations all over the country.
Limbaugh and all the national blowhards on those stations have been opposing the recounts and lying about the motivations and facts involved.
All the local blowhards on those stations will parrot the same crap and will be locally coordinated by GOP for their particular state needs in obstructing recounts.
All of those blowhards will try to intimidate those trying to do the recount and enable those trying to obstruct the recounts. If protestors/mobs are needed to oppose recounts those radio stations will help direct them.
The elected officials in those states depend heavily on those stations. They play a big part in everything Republicans do in those states. They helped sell and excuse Trump and will continue to.
The local blowhards on those stations may be getting very loud and irrational in their objections. One local morning blowhard I heard on WIBA in Madison, Dan Conry, must have called us communists 20 times in the 15 minutes I heard, screaming for most of it. During two short samplings of that the station they played two promos for UW Badgers sports, football, and hockey.
It doesnt matter if the school is actually doing promos on the shows. The ability to broadcast their sports gives those stations a major advantage over other stations in attracting advertising.
Theres no reason the universities can't start looking for apolitical alternatives.
The mere possibility that those stations might lose that ability to use the school brand to attract advertising revenue and may have to find alternative programming will totally disrupt the republican political machine in that state.
Those stations, like all RW stations, played important parts in selling the voter fraud fraud, turning a few cases of fraud into millions and were instrumental in getting voter suppression legislation passed in states across the country.
Americans must stop letting our publicly funded institutions of higher learning to be used to destroy our democracy.
Boycott every business that advertises on Trump radio, protest those 88 universities, and get the House and Senate in 2 years.

(1,767 posts)We had a great progressive AM radio station in Portland that shut down because they could not make enough in ad revenue to cover costs. But we have two stations full of Rush, Hannity, Savage and the like going strong, and this is progressive Portland Oregon!!
The key is not just boycott for change, but then support the advertizers after the change happens.

(9,090 posts)stoprush showed how shallow the support is
most stations are just benefitting from the fact they are the loudest around and for many of them those associations with university sports is everything.
it's mom and pop vs wall mark and they protect their monopoly.
i'll bet if just 20% were liberal the rw would have no chance - their lying depends on avoiding competition and never being challenged

(1,767 posts)In any given radio market advertising rates are mostly determined by how many ears are listening to a station during a time period. This is called a "share" here is a link for more info,
https://tlr.nielsen.com/tlr/public/market.do?method=loadAllMarket
The higher the share, the more a station can charge for ads.
A good example is KGO in San Francisco. They essentially dumped their entire left leaning lineup in 2011 because of share loss. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/05/kgo-radio-format-change_n_1129961.html
So if a stations programs dont draw ears, they dont stay in business long. Unfortunatly many progressive stations have gone under exactly for this reason. Here is an article which does a good postmortem on why these stations fail.

(9,090 posts)global warming, deregulation, tax breaks, unqualified supremes, etc, and that's worth trillions.
you can't compare the big city stations to the other 1000 or 1100 or more stations baking 40 red states without competition, reinforcing the same think tank scripted message coordinated at the national and local level.
they bought up and subsidized those stations and they protect their monopoly. the idea that 95% of the people who would listen to talk radio prefer the racist humorless lies and ignorance of rw radio is an insult to americans.
they have a monopoly and liberals have ignored it and never challenged it and that's why we're in this mess.

(9,090 posts)just seeing protests or even having a discussion about the absurdity of a school supporting global warming denial and defunding public education will scare advertisers away and most of those stations couldn't handle that
