This is Putin's pre-emptive attack. He knows that the golden shower tape is coming out. He's trying to frame it as a fake in advance. He MUST protect his asset into which so much has been invested.

At first, I thought maybe he wanted to get caught, but with enough plausible deniability to throw the American system into utter chaos. But then he realized what a pawn he has in Trump. Couldn't believe his good fortune at turning an American president into a pliant puppet. Now he needs to protect that asset, at all cost.
