2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumLack of a Message and Overconfidence are Reasons Hillary Clinton lost in 2016
I agree with Vice President Joe Biden that Hillary Clinton did not know why she was running for President. I do not think she felt obligated to become the first female president, but I do think she probably ran just because her last name was Clinton. I think her lack of a real reason for running for President caused her to not have a clear message. Yes, she had good ideas and good policies, but not a clear way to explain those policies and ideas.
Overconfidence is the second reason Hillary Clinton did not win the electoral college vote. There were just too many people who believed that Donald Trump could not and would not win the election. Those people thought they did not have to vote for Hillary Clinton. Remember, there were a number of people in blue states who were saying they were not going to vote for Hillary Clinton because they lived in a safe blue state so they could either not vote for President, or they could vote for a third party candidate for President. The problem is too many people refused to vote for Hillary Clinton and as a result Donald Trump won. If the election was held again Hillary Clinton would win in a landslide.

(63,256 posts)I heard a very distinct, very democratic message.
But the fucking media refused to carry any of it or give her any time while giving her opponent unlimited airtime and fawning coverage.

I don't know whether the voters were overconfident, but HRC certainly wasn't. She was fighting for every vote. She even had Al Gore do an event with her in Florida, to remind people how close an election can sometimes be.
