Hey, DU Administrators

Far too many DU posts that link to YouTube videos are problematic. The videos require one to log into YouTube before they'll play.

What's up with that?

Is this a DU problem or is it YouTube?

I've stopped following DU posts with video links because it's simpler for me to watch political videos on YouTube.

And while I have your attention, I keep getting these interruptions on DU where my browser (Safari) is being "verified." What's that about?

Thank you for your response.

ETA: I use several Mac Air laptops and a couple of iPads all running the latest OS and Safari. I do not have any VPNs or ad-blockers or anything like that. The YouTube issue has only developed recently. It's not really a problem, just a minot annoyance.

Thanks again.

Posting to websites but I’m not sure.

I get the verified thing.

It seems to be a safari thing. I just tried the google app and didn’t have any problems at all with videos. I wonder if there’s something I can change in the options. I haven’t checked yet.

And didn’t have any problems watching videos. So looks like it’s a problem with safari. Will try it more today since sometimes safari takes awhile to act up.

Google Chrome is very power-intensive which is why I prefer to use Safari.

The YouTube/DU/Safari problem is very minor. It's just that it cropped up recently.

Haven’t figured it out yet. I don’t care for chrome but haven’t really used it.

Edit: when mine started acting up it wasn’t bad. But has seemed to get worse over time.

I posted that I was having the same problem with YouTube, not being able to get the videos to run. The very next day I had no problem. The day after that the same problem was back again. I’ve given up trying to get YouTube videos to play. Makes my scroll through Latest posts much faster.

8. The YouTube problem is YouTube

I’ve never run into this problem personally, but lots of people have reported it recently. Unfortunately I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it — we just allow YouTube content to be embedded on DU pages, but whatever happens within that embed is controlled by YouTube.

The “checking browser” interrupt is a security feature provided by our ad partner. I’ve talked to them before about trying to get rid of it because it’s annoying (and doesn’t give a proper description of what it is, thus confusing the user) but I guess it is still showing. The bottom line is that it is legitimate and not dangerous, it’s just an annoyance. Is it happening to you a lot? How often, would you say?

Both my YouTube puzzle and the browser issue are totally minor annoyances. Thanks for your time and explanations! I can live with things as they are.

I can scour the internet later today to get a better idea.

Sometimes the videos play without a hitch.

Anyway, it's less than a minor problem.
