(22,811 posts)The avatar problem is related to the problem with the servers. The servers have now been upgraded, but we are still working to get things stable (which they aren't at the moment, since one of them is having a problem right now). Once we've got things stabilized, we should be able to resolve the avatar issue.

(22,811 posts)We're still in cleanup mode from our recent server upgrade. Currently it looks like one of the servers (upload) is not working properly. We're discussing this with our service provider at the moment. In the meantime, the other servers are still working, so I recommend using www.
For the record, www is what you should be using most of the time. There have definitely been previous occasions when I've suggested using https://upload.democraticunderground.com as a workaround, when one of our other servers has been having a problem, but it's not what I would recommend using all the time. https://www.democraticunderground.com is the preferred URL.

(22,811 posts)To clarify, 99% of the time using "upload" or "www" makes no difference whatsoever. We use multiple servers all running in sync, so the difference is that when you visit "upload" you're only connecting to a single server, whereas if you connect to "www" you will be directed to any of the servers (including upload).
If one of the servers has a problem, and you connect to www, there's a chance that you might be directed to the problem server, which would give you an error. In that situation, a workaround is to try switching to upload. If upload is NOT the server with the problem, you should then get a consistent connection. Of course, if upload IS the problem (which it was today) then visiting upload won't help.
FWIW it looks like the current upload problem may be resolved...
