I assume that was said in fun, but the part of my brain that insists on taking things a little too literally begs to differ.
He's made it pretty clear that he "loves" women (at least those who meet his personal standards of attractiveness), and that He's not shy about taking what he wants and grabbing him by the p**** if he feels like it.
He also does not appear to particularly like animals at all. By all accounts, he has never owned a pet of any kind in his entire life. I don't think he's attracted to them in any sense of the word.
His towering narcissistic ego dictates that he have sex with women he considers attractive when opportunities present themselves, because to him, that "proves" how successful and powerful he is. I'm sure he's very flexible about the ages of such "women," but beyond that, I'd bet he's pretty particular in other respects. 
I remember the Vietnam quote, but having unprotected sex with a large number of random (human) partners does carry a pretty high risk of contracting an std. As you have pointed out, he is rumored to not use condoms, so it makes perfect sense to me that he was referring to sleeping with a lot of different women.
As unappealing as I find him to be, I really doubt there has ever been a major shortage of women willing to sleep with him, especially back in the Vietnam era, when he was young, rich, and not yet completely disgusting looking. He knew how to turn on the charm back then, too. I also can't imagine him sleeping with anyone (or anything) he would consider "beneath" him. He has too high an opinion of himself for that, imo.
It's fine with me if you don't agree, but it would take a lot more to convince me that he would have ever have had sex with anything other than hot, (relatively) young women.
