Ok....Cat on a Hot Tin Roof........Paul Newman's character is GAY!!!!!!!

I never knew that until I saw the intro by Mankowitz on TCM. Wow. And Elizabeth Taylor is a gorgeous babe in this movie. And really, that’s just bad of me to say that of her, she is just a beauty.

but I was maybe a little too 'unschooled' in those days? Just thought it was a desperately unhappy family dynamic ...
(and, as I remember - frankly kind of a turn off)

it wasn't well hidden. Tennessee Williams always has sexual undertones in his stories. Sometimes he overdoes it, though. Half of the time when I am watching one of his works I have to hit "pause" and I do Google research and it helps me to understand the characters more clearly.

Goes into all sorts of hidden homosexuality in classic films.
My favorite is Ben Hur. Gore Vidal explains he wrote the one character as if he was Ben Hur’s former lover who wants to rekindle the relationship, but didn’t tell Heston that. The dynamic is hilarious once you see the subtext

Liz Taylor was so gorgeous, wouldn't take much for a straight male to hop into bed with her.

So all is forgiven about his previous sexual questioning and impotence.

Saw it twice onstage. Saw a teleplay with Olivier, Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood. Terrific story.

Apparently, Williams was talked into bringing Big Daddy back for the final scene. As originally written, he only had the one, but Elia Kazan convinced Williams he could not bring a character like that onstage, then not let the audience ever see him again.
