Related: About this forumI am a type 2 diabetic, I was wondering about drinking alcoholic beverages
and the risks. I love a cold beer here and there. And maybe some Absolute and cranberry juice. In moderation? Your thoughts..

(12,234 posts)My doc said one drink - a glass of wine, a mixed drink or a beer was fine (I'm on oral meds only - metformin 500mg 2x daily and my A1C sits around 6.4). The rule from ADA guidelines is if your sugars are well controlled, is not to go over one drink if you're a female or 2 for a man, and make sure you don't do it on an empty stomach.

I was diagnosed back in January. In the diabetes class I took affiliated with our hospital, the teacher told us that she almost lost her son who had type 1 and was on insulin. He was celebrating his 21st birthday, wasn't careful about how much he was drinking, he passed out and his "friends" dumped him at his house (lives with his mom). She checked his blood sugar and he was down to 24. Thankfully Mom knew what to do while the paramedics were on the way. She kept a tube of gel icing and was rubbing that on his gums when the paramedics arrived.
Be extra healthy, aim for a 5oz glass of red wine 3-4x wk with dinners to help your HDL numbers. I told my dr. that was a "prescription" I could stick to.

Your vodka and cranberry juice should be made with artificially sweetened juice. The sweetened juice will shoot your blood sugar up high.
