Omaha women's basketball picks up another big win, extends surprising streak
After Omaha women's basketball finished dead last in the Summit League last season, fans and players alike had understandably dampened expectations for the 2024-25 campaign.
But as the Mavericks continue to mow through a challenging nonconference schedule, things appear to finally be trending in the right direction. Omaha picked up its fourth straight win Wednesday, surviving a late comeback by Portland State in the first game of the Big Sky-Summit Challenge, beating the Vikings 65-57.
The win was actually Omaha's widest margin of victory of the four-game winning streak, with each of the other three being decided by five points or less.
After opening up a four-point lead early in the fourth quarter, Portland State quickly fought back, with a pair of free throws eventually tying the score at 53-53 with five minutes to play. The teams traded baskets until the final minute of regulation, when Omaha finally took over. The Mavericks didn't allow a point in the final 2:47 of play while picking up eight points of their own over that span to close it out.
