Am I the only person who thinks
that maybe, just maybe, in light of recent events, we should not be planning to nominate anyone over the age of 70?

(27,761 posts)is a fuck of a lot higher than for those younger.
Perhaps this election season will let us figure out what is to be done when a potential nominee . . .
Well, I won't go there.
But we really, really need to be looking at younger people here.

(27,761 posts)People here have been touting Chris Cuomo as a guarantee of 12 years of Democratic President. Great. Never have another President under the age of 65 ever again in my lifetime.
As a country we really should be looking to a younger generation to lead us.
Oh, I'll vote for whoever the Democratic nominee is, be sure of that. But I recall how a lot of people were bothered by the fact that Ronald Reagan was almost 70 when he became President. Both Biden and Sanders would be older at Inauguration than Reagan was when he left the Presidency.
And yeah, even though younger people have died, are dying from the virus, it hits older people much harder.

(58,785 posts)during the Obama administration. The H1N1 (Swine) flu got loose, but strong national response kept deaths far lower than they might have been.
That epidemic disease would show up again during Trump's administration was TOTALLY PREDICTABLE. This should never have happened. It should have been stopped cold like SARS and MERS.
As for age of our president, the MOST important thing to note is that the next epidemic disease to be fought off (next month? Next year?) might specialize in killing children and young people. Making sure it can't is why we need the president Biden will be.
Btw, regarding your original concern, the latest estimated death rate is 0.66% overall. It's several times that in septuagenarians, of course, but we're looking in the range of 3%-plus for people who have good surveillance and healthcare.

(1,402 posts)In the middle of a pandemic, you want to start a new democratic nomination process? What's your plan? Judging by your indecisiveness regarding a democratic candidate, I'd be surprised if you've got anything to recommend.

(71,133 posts)Yes, I know you will come back with, he is over 70 also, but if the Sanders people can't have Sanders...destroying Biden as a nominee would be very satisfying for many of them... Only he already won...and he will beat Trump. So, no Joe works just fine for me and in the case he could not perform his duties as president...we have an elected Vice President...so get on the Biden train ; we are heading to the White House where it will take all of Biden's many years of acquired knowledge to fix what Trump has broken...hand waving and yelling just won't cut it in these perilous times.

(71,133 posts)procedure is flawed and you want a different nominee than Biden. Well the primary is done regardless of when you vote.Biden is leading by just under 30 points in every remaining state. Some primaries will happen in April at which point, Sanders' staying in becomes more silly...however that doesn't change the point...you simply can't change the rules at this point because you want a different nominee Biden will be the nominee and is beating Trump in the polls. We need Trump gone and that is what will happen with Biden.I understand the disappointment when your candidate loses the primary but time to move on. The choice is between Biden and Trump.

(27,761 posts)it's that not only will I not have any real say in who the nominee will be, but that I wish people would re-think electing yet another senior citizen to the Presidency.
Heck, we should be considering Jimmy Carter. He's a youthful 95 at this point, eligible to serve another four years, and was actually a far better President than he's ever been given credit for.

(27,761 posts)And honestly, I don't know anyone even a decade younger who is as healthy as I am. I'm flabbergasted by all the people around me, and here on DU, who have multiple medical issues. And are a lot younger than me.
We do know that Sanders had a heart attack a few months ago.
Biden does seem to be very healthy, which is good. But still.
