Updated: Democrats to postpone convention amid COVID-19 concerns

The Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is expected to be postponed due to rising COVID-19 concerns.
The convention will be moved to the week of Aug. 17, according to a release from the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC).
The event was previously scheduled to take place July 13-16.
"In our current climate of uncertainty, we believe the smartest approach is to take additional time to monitor how this situation unfolds so we can best position our party for a safe and successful convention," Joe Solmonese, CEO of the DNCC, said in a statement. "During this critical time, when the scope and scale of the pandemic and its impact remain unknown, we will continue to monitor the situation and follow the advice of health care professionals and emergency responders."

(2,042 posts)Why give a platform to people hell bent on participating solely for the purpose of disrupting because their candidate isn’t the nominee.

(96,043 posts)He is, after all, the only Democrat remaining in the contest.
The Democratic Party should begin now to consider Mr. Biden in all ways its nominee. Its leading figures should speak out for him and begin to campaign and raise funds for him. 'Bernie' should be ignored, and made to run explicitly against the Democratic Party. It is the only way to draw his teeth in regard to the general election, and the best way to minimize the size of his cult following.
If these things are done, postponement of the convention, which does seem indicated by concerns of public health, will make sense politically as well.

"From Bernie’s perspective, dropping out of a race once you have no chance of winning is peculiar behavior that can only be explained by the work of a hidden hand. For most politicians, though, it is actually standard operating procedure. Only Sanders seems to think the normal thing to do once voters have made clear they don’t want to nominate you is to continue campaigning anyway."
"When things are not called by their right names, what is said cannot make sense. When what is said does not make sense, what is planned cannot succeed. When plans do not succeed, people become uneasy. When people are uneasy, punishments do not fit crimes. When punishments do not fit crimes, people cannot know where to put hand or foot."

(17,656 posts)The party should nominate someone else, like cuomo.
There is no conceivable way bernie has earned the nomination. He won't have a majority of delegates to get a first round nod. Others will jump back in if joe drops out and deny bernie the majority.
He is in it only to grift. The party should just end this now. If they want a fig leaf, change the rules and allow a single period for any registered dem in a state that hasn't yet voted to cast a preference via mail or the web.
This isn't an election. States can't dictate how they are run (except to say you can't hold an election event on a particular day). Primaries are entirely managed by the party holding them. Many small parties don't hold elections at all, they just meet as a committee and make a choice.

(96,043 posts)Sanders is absolutely unacceptable, and how a political party selects its nominee is a private matter.

(33,424 posts)It gives the party out of power an extra month to campaign for the general election. Also campaign finance laws say certain funds can only be spend on the general election so it gives them an extra month to spend those funds.

(10,782 posts)should they just have a virtual convention in July and skip an in person convention altogther?

(33,424 posts)But it would be impossible to hold a virtual convention that was a true convention. There are 4,000 delegates, not counting alternate delegates, staff, media, special guests, etc. There is no way thousands of people could realistically be meeting at the same time.
