"...On Monday, Buttigieg released a set of policy proposals designed to prevent other Americans from facing the same dilemma that his mother had. His plan is aimed at ensuring that older Americans have access to affordable long-term care and can maintain their economic independence after retirement."

"Buttigiegs plan also focuses on boosting the number of direct care workers, supporting unpaid family caregivers, promoting access to care in homes and communities, and extending Social Security. His plan would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hoursomething he and other candidates have proposed in the pastand establish a National Direct Care Workforce Standards Board to help regulate the industry and set policies for issues such as compensation, training and recruitment.
Its so important that we support caregiving as a profession, Buttigieg told TIME. First and foremost, we are going to need more people in the field. Secondly its just morally unacceptable that so many people in such an important field are earning poverty wages. Third, theres a big equity concern because so many caregivers are disproportionately likely to be women and to be workers of color.

I think this article explains the plan better than the Yahoo Finance article I posted in the Democratic Primaries forum.

(152,301 posts)This is not a glamorous field, but one in which many women of color labor for a pittance.
Our elders and their caregivers deserve much better, and Pete supplies it.

(3,958 posts)In what was one of the most surreal moments ever, I met with Mayor Pete last Monday in Creston, IA. We had a conversation in a local coffee shop in Creston, IA, prior to a town hall event.
I shared the struggle that families have when faced with the need for long term care. Every single issue I raised with him is covered in his policy. He listened, which is what he does so well, and he shared a little about what he faced when his father was ill and they thought long term care might be needed.
Mayor Pete is the real deal! I'll never forget this moment and I'm still pinching myself! And, I got my copy of Shortest Way Home signed.

(8,449 posts)I'm not surprised he listened closely--that's one of his strengths, I think--but I haven't had time to dig into his plan, so I'm happy to hear that it covers all the issues you discussed.
How lucky to meet him when he had time for a conversation!

His Care America plan for long term care is fantastic and will give immediate relief to millions going through this. I'm so hopeful!
