As for avoiding jail, I think he's decided to settle for a career as a mental patient under private medical care -- which is possible if he can convince the courts that he's too incompetent to stand trial or even be sentenced. At least, it would certain explain his ratcheting up his down cognitive decline now that it's clear that he's going to lose.
