Harry talks with Michael Tomasky, Editor of the New Republic, about his article, Why Does No One Understand the Real Reason Trump Won?
Tomasky digs beneath the demographic information about increased Hispanic voters or concerns about immigration to explain the pivotal fact that vast fractions of the electorate roughly those who voted for Trump had a false narrative fed to them by right-wing media, which has become more powerful than legacy media in this country (owing in part to the decline of legacy media), and, far more importantly, speaks in one voice and has a hammerlock on the attention of nearly half the country.
Tomasky delineates the strategic genesis and rise of right-wing media, tracing it to huge contributions from right wing forces, whereas the lefts high rollers chiefly contribute to specific causes. Tomasky posits that the right-wing media will not be satisfied with its notable successes but will aim for full domination, and sounds a warning bell for the left to appreciate and respond to the immense political force. - 11/28/2024.

(18,193 posts)The worst part is that the press we trusted for years has joined the pack. I will never forgive them for the way they attacked Joe Biden for one misstep. He was exhausted, traveling, working night and day, but they totally ignored Trump, his lies, his increasing hate filled rants.
The leaders of our party have to share some blame for turning their backs on the President to embrace a shiny new object..
I hope this passes standards here, but think our leaders need to face reality. They should have come out in force for the President, fought for him with everything they had.
Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving,, Rhiannon. No crowds for me, i will shop online, thank you.🫠🫤🇺🇸👏🥰

(223,396 posts)I couldn't wait for the 2016 election to be over so we'd never have to see or hear from the offensive blowhard again. Shows what I know. And since then he's become a convicted criminal, so he continues to lead the news to the exclusion of the Biden administration's record accomplishments!
As for my Thanksgiving, my plans for the day fell through since we were snowed in here in Northeastern New York and I decided against taking a chance on the roads. *sigh*

(18,193 posts)Sorry to hear your snow storm hit. Will all of you be able to make another day?
My family is mostly gone, but my Sons Sisters and. bILs all accepted me. So, different but I have a big family again.
I am heartsick over the election, but am concentrating on the good things in my own life that includes catching up on the things that have been neglected for the last 2 years of one health problem after another.
Coming on this board is such a relief, I feel guilty complaing but also know we have to fight back and face our Parties problems. I know things can change. Earl G keeps us sane.🥰👏🌈
BTW, I ANSWERED Adam Schiff email and was shocked he answered tight back wishing me a Happy Thanksgiving. Not a name dropper here, but I never get anything from my Republican officials here in Ohio. Sherrod Brown always answered as soon as he had time. I will never understand how Mike DeWine won, except he used an illegal map our State Supreme Court ruled illegal 5 times. My State has the honor of being the most corrupt of the 50 states.

(223,396 posts)There's no chance they'll get eaten here. And the biggest disappointment was missing out on seeing and talking with friends I don't get to see that often. And as far as politics are concerned, they all would fit in here, so it's a relief to discuss what's currently going on with them as well.
And very cool that you heard back from Adam Schiff, now senator! As far as Sherrod Brown is concerned, I also consider that an unexpected blow. He's always been one of our best and brightest and has a national profile. One of my oldest friends, grew up in nearby Vermont, now lives in Ohio and she must feel the same way. During one of the last reunions I had with her and my other childhood friends, it was shortly before the previous election, and I said that I'd sooner vote for the next person who drove by sooner than TFG and they all agreed with me.

(223,396 posts)I grew up watching the local CBS affiliate and wrote the descriptions for CBS programming for U.S. newspapers for my long-time job. But now I have to avoid their local news, they're now Sinclair, though I wonder how many regular viewers know. Since I regularly watch Stephen Colbert (and post his monologue and opening here), I often catch the very end of the news when I change the channel to Colbert, I've noticed that they no longer tell viewers to stay tuned for Colbert.

(18,193 posts)I am sorry to say, but am hearing much of the same thing we are saying. They need to admit they were wrong and simply followed the hysterical, totally biased media instead of standing up, fighting for President Biden

(49,041 posts)I'm in the NYC metropolitan region.
In 1998, there were 2-3 talk radio stations: WWOR, WABC, WEVD.
WWOR was generally non-political. Shows ranged from what to see on Broadway, to cooking, to general discussion.
WABC had Rush and Bob Grant as novelty acts and for "balance". The rest of the hosts were generally liberal, e.g., Lynn Samuels, Lionel, Alan Colmes, Ron Kuby. Gradually the progressive hosts were fired and replaced with RW talk show hosts. (FYI: Sean Hannity got his foothold in NYC radio on WABC, doing the overnight hours.)
WEVD was a very small radio station, WEVD. Originally created to honor Eugene V. Debs. It broadcast in several languages for the newly immigrated: Yiddish, Polish, Slavic, etc. By 1998, it had three very strong hosts, encompassing a majority of its broadcast hours: Bill Mazer, Sam Greenfield, and Alan Colmes. Ed Koch and Lionel were later added. And the programs were very popular and had people waiting on hold to talk to them on the air. Especially seniors who were still loyal to FDR and The New Deal. The hosts had progressive writers whom they interviewed, e.g., Michael Tomasky, Lars Erik Nelson, Wayne Barrett, and democratic officeholders (local, regional, and national).
The Jewish Forward owned WEVD and the 1050 AM band. And it was persuaded to sell the station in 2001 to the ABC Network/Disney/ESPN, to the dismay of the listeners. And at midnight on August 31, 2001, the format died. And 1050 was given to ESPN to be the flagship station for its network. NYC now has TWO sports radio talk networks and not a single network for even non-conservative radio. New York City, not Steubenville, OH!
The Air America network gave a valiant attempt to return progressive talk radio. It started on WLIB and transferred to WWRL. And it couldn't survive.
WWRL tried to maintain its own progressive programs as The Morning Show (Sam Greenfield and Armstrong Williams), Ed Schulz, etc., but that too, couldn't survive.
At the moment, there are 2-3 stations that are talk radio and all are RW: WABC, WWOR, and WNYM. All claim to be "conservative" radio, but they aren't. Wholly right wing outlets.
And there hasn't been a station on the AM Band in the NYC area that broadcasts liberal/progressive programs since 2011. The last one was on WVNJ in New Jersey, "The Morning Show".

(49,041 posts)I listen to WBAI periodically and appreciate their efforts. That being said, it's not a commercial radio station (listener-supported) and not as viable as their former AM brethren.

(143,436 posts)as a Philly listener of NYC talk since the '80s. I know I have posted before that I happened to have heard Limbaugh's very first broadcast on WABC in 1988 - mainly because I had tuned in to listen to Lynn Samuels and his show booted hers (and she was-then jokingly whining about being kicked out of her studio for his show). Later, Samuels went loon and became a tried and true "birther".
I had been through the bouncing around of "GET OFF MY PHONE!!11!!!!!!" Bob Grant (from WABC to WOR to WABC again) and would also note for you to not forget the Sliwa family dynasty of Curtis and (ex-) wife Lisa (and I think he is still on the air).
Curtis Sliwa briefly had that "duet" with Ron Kuby as "Curtis and Kuby", during the era of having shows that featured a "liberal" and a "conservative" to kick off the banter and talk material. Similarly at night was " (John) Batchelor and (Paul) Alexander", which was actually an intelligent show - particularly during the early days of the Gulf War(s).
Where the "liberal/progressive" radio attempted to survive was on the black-owned stations that had some kind of talk format - as mentioned WLIB (which had actually run/syndicated Rev. Al Sharpton's "Keeping it Real" ) and talker/activist Bob Law (who was on WWRL during a graveyard shift, about the only time my mom and me could pick the station up in that crowded spectrum with what was a relatively lower-power station).
What RWers did with the stations once they gobbled them up, was to program a slate of loon talkers and then syndicate that across the country - i.e., people like Mike Gallagher, Hugh Hewitt, Michael ( "Savage" ) Weiner, Dennis Prager, Bill Bennett, Glenn Beck, Dennis Miller, Joe Piscopo, etc. Of course Hannity was nurtured on WABC and spun off into his own lala land like Beck and Weiner.
