You actually don't even have to have been in the military. I disagree vehemently with DeSantis on policy, but he's not stupid, and he's a relatively competent administrator, even if his decisions are odious.
I actually don't see what's in it for him to take the job. As I've said elsewhere, "I serve at the pleasure of..." is not a good resume builder for the top slot, which is what DeSantis has in mind down the road.
