DOJ was investigating his sale of shares of the company’s stock options worth $15.1 million in February, just two weeks before the DOJ announced its probe into the company. DOJ was also attemping to block UnitedHealth Group Incorporated from spending $3.3 billion to acquire its rival health and hospice provider, Amedisys Inc., as it would be monopolistic.

A grieving family member would not have the money to hire a sophisticated hit man. If they did have that kind of money, they would have spent it on their loved one's care.

This looks like someone with money got pissed at Thompson.
