the Nakba. Last November the violent right wing radical Daniella Weiss was given a "tour" of areas of Gaza by supposedly "unauthorized" IDF personnel so she could scout out settlement locations. Despite all of her years of violent activity and arrests by the police she never got more than a few days of house arrest and small fines.
She is celebrated now at Universities in Israel and has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by professors at 2 different universities. Despite the violence, despite calling for ethnic cleansing. Despite responding to a question about the deaths of Palestinian children by saying "my children are prior to the children of the enemy". Nobody in the US government or media seems to talk about anti-Palestinian activities at Israeli Universities and any pulling of funds or crackdowns and calls for deportations.
One could say that one thing is in the US and the other in Israel but the fact of the matter is that money, research grants and access are freely allowed between US universities and those in Israel. Including the 2 professors who nominated Weiss for the Nobel. Perhaps largely because people here have become afraid of being labeled or grabbed for calling for divestment etc. But we can be sure that the US will have no objections to these 2 professors getting visas to come here if they wished.
I would not give a Nobel to people like Weiss or Arafat types etc. In fact in some ways Weiss seems like a pale version of an Arafat wannabe. I'd just like a little more consistency and less hypocrisy in how our government and media deal with things. But it's not like hypocrisy in our government and media is anything new and as we all know it certainly isn't restricted to the Middle East.
