In this case, I'm actually more likely to believe Trump. I mean, it makes perfect sense that Trump became infatuated with the guy because he was a General wearing a MAGA hat. Why else would Trump have cared? He thinks he knows more than any general so why would he even give the guy the time of day unless it was clear that they shared the same "politics".
