There once was a boss with a pen
Who lectured the newsroom again:
“Do legwork,” she said,
From a very tall head—
To staff who’d been working since ten.

Bari spoke of “public trust” with a smile,
While pausing a story a while.
“Be fair,” was the call,
As she stopped it all—
A lesson in irony’s style.

She urged them to dig and to grind,
Seek truths that were hidden or blind,
Yet somehow that zeal
Took a sudden conceal
When the topic crossed power’s red line.

“Unexpected!” she chimed from above,
“Tell stories the audience’ll love.”
But unexpected, it seemed,
Was when journalists dreamed
Of scrutiny aimed up, not of.

So the staff did more “legwork,” no doubt,
While wondering what that’s about:
When years in the field
Are so quickly unsealed
By memos that talk, not report.
