91. Criticize the lies, not the occupation

I think we’re talking past each other a bit.

My point wasn’t that this person should be immune from criticism, nor was it about whether other allegations are true or false. What has struck me about discussions of Melania’s past is how many of the comments seem to treat “sex worker” as a slur in itself—as though having done sex work automatically makes someone dirty, ridiculous, or beneath contempt.

What I find far more interesting is the apparent effort to deny, conceal, or rewrite that part of her history. If there’s hypocrisy there, let’s talk about the hypocrisy. If there are lies, let’s talk about the lies.

What I was pushing back against was the assumption that having been a sex worker is, by itself, something shameful that makes a person deserving of ridicule.
